What Not To Do After Removal

April 18, 2017

Tattoo removal is meant to help you erase any past mistakes you may have made, but there are still mistakes that you can make when it comes to post-procedure process. Ranging from jumping straight into the pool to shaving too soon, here is a list of no-no’s to avoid right after the procedure.

Due to possible infection, it’s not recommended to immerse your treated area into hot or potentially dirty water for a few days post treatment. This includes bathes, hot tubs, oceans, pools, lakes, and rivers.

We also suggest avoiding direct and or high water pressure as the skin will be very sensitive and you don’t want to risk exposing the area to any infections or scarring.

It’s best to avoid activities that can increase swelling immediately after your treatment. The size and location of your tattoo can vary the amount of time to avoid exercise.

For smaller tattoos / tattoos located on the torso – rest for 24 hours post treatment. You can resume activity if there is no swelling after the first 24 hours, but be sure to shower and change the dressing as soon as possible afterward.

For larger tattoos / tattoos on extremities – It is best to avoid exercise for at least 48 hours after your procedure. High amounts of activity can increase the swelling, which can lead to blistering and scarring.

Direct Sun Exposure

Excessive sun exposure to a recently treated area can lead to burning, skin darkening, and scarring. If you must be in the sun soon after your procedure, wear sufficient sunscreen.

Avoid shaving directly over the treated area to keep any scabbing intact. Removing scabbing can result in excessive scarring. You are also increasing your chances of infection if your razor isn’t clean.

If you allow your treated area to heal naturally, it will decrease the amount of time between treatments, and will significantly decrease your chances of any scarring or permanent skin damage. Tattoo removal is safe but trying to rush the process can have harmful, lasting effects.

The size, depth, and color of the inked area is also a factor in the number of treatments needed. In your consultation, our Seattle Tattoo Removal Master Aesthetician will be able to give you greater insight as to what your tattoo removal treatments will entail.

Patients who have received tattoo removal treatments with the Cutera enlighten laser compare the sensation to having a rubber band snapped against their skin. Not bad, right? But even better: Sound Tattoo Removal operates within Sound Vascular under the direction of a Medical Doctor. That means that unlike most tattoo removal centers, we can offer most patients lidocaine, a topical anesthetic to numb your skin. While your tattoo is being removed, you'll barely feel a thing.

Many patients report some redness and swelling. It doesn’t last long, and you can go about your normal work and family life immediately after treatment and throughout the process.
