Removing Tattoos by Color

March 21, 2017

Did you know that the color of a tattoo can play a big role in the cost and amount of time it takes to remove? Some pigments are significantly easier to remove from skin, and will absorb the light of the laser more effectively. Others will take more time and money to completely erase.

Essentially, the easiest tattoo colors to remove are black, grey and red. The tattoos that are most difficult to remove consist mainly of green, blue, or yellow.

A solely black tattoo will respond much better than a colored one. Particularly if it's primarily shaded with black and gray.

If you do have a colored tattoo, red is the easiest color to remove, followed by dark green and dark blue. Green, purple, yellow and blue have always been the most difficult colors to remove. Especially if they're light toned.

All ink colors have selected light absorption spectra. For the treatment of a specific color to be effective, lasers must have the proper wavelength to emit adequate energy within the given absorption spectrum of the pigment.

A color must be able to absorb the laser in order to be broken down and removed. It is particularly important to ensure that the laser is able to emit the proper wavelength necessary to remove a certain color.

The two tattoo colors that are the most difficult to remove are white and black-light ink, as white ink tends to simply darken as the treatments progress.

Although you probably don’t consider how difficult a tattoo will be to remove when you are first selecting it, it is important to understand the effects different colors can play when you are thinking about tattoo removal.

Patients who have received tattoo removal treatments with the Cutera enlighten laser compare the sensation to having a rubber band snapped against their skin. Not bad, right? But even better: Sound Tattoo Removal operates within Sound Vascular under the direction of a Medical Doctor. That means that unlike most tattoo removal centers, we can offer most patients lidocaine, a topical anesthetic to numb your skin. While your tattoo is being removed, you'll barely feel a thing.

Many patients report some redness and swelling. It doesn’t last long, and you can go about your normal work and family life immediately after treatment and throughout the process.
