How Many Treatments Will It Take?

November 04, 2016

The number of treatments required to successfully remove a tattoo can vary significantly due to a number of factors. Size, location, density and color of tattoo ink, and device used all affect the amount of time it takes to remove the tattoo. It is typically quite difficult to guarantee the removal of a tattoo within a specific number of treatments. That said, an expert tattoo removal specialist can evaluate the following factors to determine tattoo removal success.

Tattoo size

One variable that is undeniable is that larger tattoos require more treatments than smaller tattoos. The larger the tattoo, the longer it will take to remove.

Tattoo age

Older tattoos are prone to pigment fading and may be more easily removed than newer tattoos.

Ink color

Green, blue, and black inks are easier to remove, while red, orange, yellow, and white inks are progressively more challenging.

People who smoke regularly can have a 70% lower rate of complete removal after 10 sessions compared to their non-smoking counterparts. Smoking has a negative impact on the ability for a wound to heal, so it takes longer in between each treatment and can require extra sessions.

Skin color

Tattoo removal is more effective for individuals with lighter skin because lighter skin absorbs less laser light so the majority of the laser energy is focused on the tattoo pigment. Dark skin can pull a portion of laser light from the tattoo, requiring more time to remove the same amount of ink.

Tattoo removal is more difficult in areas that have a limited vascular supply and are slower to heal. Tattoos on the feet, lower legs, or hands require more treatments than tattoos in areas like the back or chest.

Scarring or tissue damage

Some people are more prone to developing scars or other tissue damage during the tattooing process. Ink pigment under scar tissue is much more difficult to remove and requires more treatments.

Layered tattoos

Layered tattoos, or when an individual tries to cover up their initial tattoo with another one, are difficult to remove and require significantly more treatments than singular tattoos. Most tattoo ink is translucent, meaning it is necessary to use darker ink tones to cover previous tattoos. Since the new layer is often larger and darker, full removal can be quite challenging. Additionally, layering increases the overall volume and density of ink, making it that much more difficult to remove.

Although there are many factors that can affect the removal process, the talented team members here at Tattoo Removal Seattle are trained to do their best to remove any unwanted ink from your skin. Call to make an appointment for a consultation today!

Tattoo ink exists deep below the first layer of skin. In order to reach all of the ink in the skin, multiple treatments are needed to break up the ink in layers. The size, depth, and color of the inked area is also a factor in the number of treatments needed. Patients who have received tattoo removal treatments with the Cutera enlighten laser compare the sensation to having a rubber band snapped against their skin. Not bad, right? But even better: Sound Tattoo Removal operates within Sound Vascular under the direction of a Medical Doctor. That means that unlike most tattoo removal centers, we can offer most patients lidocaine, a topical anesthetic to numb your skin. While your tattoo is being removed, you'll barely feel a thing.

Many patients report some redness and swelling. It doesn’t last long, and you can go about your normal work and family life immediately after treatment and throughout the process.
